3/5 - Prueba de sorpresa (imperfecto), Cuentos de Hadas

1. Prueba de sorpresa.

(15 puntos – Skills section of gradebook, 5 for the circles and underlines, 5 for reasons, 5 for vocab list)

En la segunda parte, tienes que hacer un libro de tu cuento. Tienes que escribir a mano y dibujar en el libro. Tu libro tiene que tener por lo menos 15 páginas. Si quieres trabajar en casa, está bien, pero tienes que trabajar en clase el jueves y el viernes. Incluye un diccionario al final de tu libro con todas las palabras nuevas de tu lista.
(25 puntos – Synthesis section of gradebook, 5 for completeness including a cover, 5 for neatness, 10 for correctly copying the text into your book including all accents and punctuation, 5 for accurate pictures that illustrate the words on each page and for a neat and orderly glossary)

Complete project is due on Tuesday, 10 May. YOU WILL LOSE ONE POINT FOR EACH DAY LATE, SO TURN IT IN ON TIME!!

28/4 - Imperfecto vs. Preterito

1. Finish worksheet from yesterday.
2. New worksheet - irregular imperfects. I will check the three sides of the worksheets tomorrow!!!
3. Preterite vs. Imperfect. We went over a simple explanation, like this one here (starts about halfway down the page).

Generally speaking, the preterite is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed. Use of the preterite tense implies that the past action had a definite beginning and definite end.

Juan habló de la una hasta las dos.
Juan spoke from one until two o'clock.
(clearly stated beginning and end)

Generally speaking, the imperfect is used for actions in the past that are not seen as completed. Use of the imperfect tense implies that the past action did not have a definite beginning or a definite end.

Las chicas hablaban en inglés.

The girls used to speak in English.
(no definite beginning or end)

3. WE did an activity telling the story of Superhombre to try to figure out preterite and imperfect. Students did very well.

Preterite review sheet

Plesae skip the first paragraph; it is a little misleading because it uses some Object Pronouns (nos) that can make it hard to figure out the subject.

Second paragraph:

1: fuimos
2: hicimos
3: pudimos
4: pesqué (-car verb)
5: nos quedamos
6: divertimos
7: alcancemos
8: construyó (i to y transformation)
9: madrugué (-gar verb)
10: anduve/anduvimos (the subject is not clear. Best to assume “yo” because the sentence before it was in the “yo” form, but since much of the paragraph was “nosotros” that is an ok assumption.
11. condujo (the “nos” is an object pronoun meaning us. The sentence means “A friend of ours drove us to the airport”.)
12. dijimos (assume nosotros because of the first part of the sentence)

2. Pen pal letters - be ready to write it tomorrow after the test.
3. Test review - 2 choices - worksheet, Jeopardy game linked in the post below this one.
Both were made using the test as a resource.

FOR MY STRESSED OUT STUDENTS
I know there are a lot of details involved in preterite, and the test is hard in that all the regular and irregular verbs are mixed up with no indication of which are which. If I were you, I would try to develop an "order of operation" to check verbs. Before starting the test, I would probably write the 3 sets of endings on the top of the test - regular -ar, regular -er/-ir, irregular stem endings. Then I would go through the whole test and look for -car, -gar, -zar verbs and do them (yo spelling change). Then I would look through the test for irregular stem verbs and do them using the endings above. Next, I would look at leftover -ir verbs and see if they could be stem-changing "sandal" verbs, and I would do all of those -ir verbs. Then I would check for ser/ir and dar/ver. Finally, I would work my way through the rest of the test, conjugating as regular verbs and looking at the spellings to see if there are any changes I need to make (i to y, the z in hizo). YOU CANNOT BRING IN A WRITTEN CHECKLIST, THIS MUST BE A MENTAL LIST.

Relax and breathe!!!

To review:
1. write endings on top of test
2. -car, -gar, -zar
3. irregular stems (pude, puse, tuve, estuve, supe, anduve, hube, hice, quise, vine, dije, traje, conduje, traduje) REMEMBER to drop the i in ieron with a "j" stem!
4. search -ir verbs, check for stem changers (e-i, o-u)
5. ser/ir, dar/ver
6. everything else, check for spelling changes (3 vowels, z in hizo, any -car, -gar, -zar you might have missed)

Extra Credit Study Sheet

EXTRA CREDIT STUDY SHEET
This extra credit assignment will be worth 10 points that will be added into the Skills section of the gradebook. This has the potential to increase your grade by around 3% - 4%.

Make a study sheet for yourself covering all aspects of the preterite. You will cover all 10 topics listed below. You may change the order but all topics must be covered completely. For each topic, you must include an explanation of what it is and how it works, and you must have examples. For the different irregular stem topics ("u", "i", "j"), you must give ALL verbs for the topic. DUE ON TUESDAY 1 MARCH, NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED! Neat, complete, and correct! NO COPYING directly from another source, the sheet must be in your words. By hand is preferable.

Topics:
1. Regular -ar verbs in preterite
2. Regular -er and -ir verbs in preterite
3. Irregular stems - "u" category
4. Irregular stems - "i" group
5. Irregular stems - "j" group (change in 3rd pers. plural)
6. Irregular stem endings
7. Spelling changes - -car, -gar, -zar, hacer in 3rd pers. singular
8. Spelling changes - i to y transformation
9. -ir verbs that have stem change in present have stem change in preterite (sandal verbs)
10. Other irregulars - ser/ir, ver/dar, reir

* This MUST be complete to get the credit, you are not allowed to leave off some topics that you feel you already know.
* All topics must be explained as if to someone who has not studied it, and there must be correct examples for each topic.
* You can use your flashcards, websites (there are some good links on the blog), worksheets I have handed out to you, and your own knowledge to create the study sheet.

8/2 - Preterite review, new preterite irregulars!!!

1. Show flash cards
2. Quiz - students with flashcards could use them.
3. Explanation of irregular stem preterite verbs. We have done lots of preterite so far, all the regular -ar, -er, -ir verbs, ones with a spelling change (-car, -gar, -zar, i to y transformation) and we did ir and ser, which don't follow any rules and you just have to memorize them. Now we enter the wonderful world of irregular preterite stems. We will learn them in groups, and today we start with verbs with a "u" in the stem. Following are the 7 verbs we are working with now:
poner - pus
poder - pud
saber - sup
haber - hub
estar - estuv
andar - anduv
tener - tuv

All the irregular stem verbs take the same endings: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, - isteis, -ieron.

4. Pass out and go over packet.
5. Make new flash cards for 7 new verbs, do activities A and B.

Reminder for students

Next week is the 6th week of school, which means that 6 week grades will be turned in soon after. Your grade might not be all you hoped for right now. Don't mess up this week! Do your flashcards and other homework assigned during the week, and study your preterite. Come in on Monday if you need help with anything or to make up missing work. Almost any missing work can still be made up for partial credit, which is better than the 0 you have right now.

On the lined side, at the top left, put the English translation ("to be"). Then on the main part of the card, put 2 conjugation grids, one with the present tense, and the other with the preterite conjugation.

28/1 - Another sub day

¡Hola estudiantes! Lo siento, pero mi hija todavía está enferma. Si no terminaste tu carta a tu pen-pal, por favor, termínala hoy. (Hi students! I’m sorry, but my daughter is still sick. If you didn’t finish your pen pal letter, please finish it today)

1. Primero, Uds. tienen que conjugar los verbos al otro lado de esta hoja de papel en el pretérito. Después, van a trabajar con un amigo a escribir un súper-mini-diálogo. Tienen que escribirlo y memorizarlo para lunes. El lunes, van a presentar los diálogos para la clase. (First, you-all have to conjugate the verbs on the other side of this page in the preterite tense. Then, you are going to work with a friend to write a super short dialog. You have to write it and memorize it for Monday.)

2. Uds. TIENEN QUE trabajar con la persona que digo aquí. Si dos personas están ausentes, sus “partners” pueden trabajar juntos. Si una persona está ausente, su “partner” puede trabajar con el “swing man.” ¡Yo sé quién está ausente! (You-all MUST work with the person I say here. If two people are absent, their partners can work together. If one person is absent, their partner can work with the “swing man.” I will know who is absent, so no messing with partners!)

6/1 - Oops, I was wrong. Also, quiz tomorrow

First of all, I was looking for a study sheet to post here to explain the preterite verb endings. When I found one, I realized that I had taught the vosotros form of -er and -ir verbs incorrectly. As my students know, vosotros is only used in Spain, and is often not taught (as was the case when I was in school). I had to look up the form, and I wrote it down wrong. I apologize and I will explain this in class tomorrow.

The -er/-ir vosotros verb ending in the preterite tense is -isteis.

Back to today,
1. Go over verb conjugations
2. -ar preterite practice
3. Dia de los Tres Reyes Magos (text p228), we read and understood, then students had to translate one of the two children's letters from the book.

La tarea: Study for quiz tomorrow on preterite verb endings. You can find the endings here

5/1 - Repaso, el preterito

Bienvenidos otra vez estudiantes!

Esta semana, estamos hablando más en español. Yo expliqué "el pretérito" a los estudiantes, y ellos aprendieron un poco la conjugación. El martes y el miércoles, también praticamos los números grandes.

El viernes, vamos a tener una prueba sobre el pretérito. Voy a explicar más en clase el jueves.
