Super Quick Preterite Review
WITH ACCENT MARKS
regular –ar endings:



regular –er/-ir endings:




-car/-gar/-zar – spelling change in “yo”
-qué/-gué/-cé

i-y transformation: verbs with a vowel right before –er or –ir ending, 3 vowels with an i in the middle, the i turns into a y. In 3rd person sing and plu only: caer = cayó, cayeron

-ir verbs with stem change in present (sandal verbs): will have stem change in pret e-i, or o-u only in 3rd person sing and plu. dormir = durmió, durmieron, BUT dormí . Oddball sandal (2 “i” in a row, drops one “i”) reir = reí, reiste, rió, reimos, reisteis, rieron

irregular stem verbs:
“u” group:

poder = pude
poner = puse
haber = hube
tener = tuve
estar = estuve
andar = anduve
saber = supe

“i” group:
hacer = hice (spell change hizo)
venir = vine
querer = quise
“j” group (3rd plu end= eron (no i)):
decir = dije (fits in “i” and “j” group)
traer = traje
conducir = conduje
traducir = traduje
